AHIS. 110 - Sandbox - Dam - 2018

Art History is a humanistic field of inquiry that studies visual culture. This survey course introduces students to selected histories and methods of the visual arts. Designed to enhance studio- based education, this course emphasizes skills and knowledge relevant to all visual art disciplines. Western visual culture is considered in its world context; artworks and artifacts are discussed in terms of their function as conveyors of complex cultural values and meanings. Survey I deals primarily with visual art from Pre-history through the end of the fifteenth century (Early Renaissance).  The course content will take the form of illustrated lectures and will be presented within a chronological framework set out within the text and informed by the assigned readings.
